A Bit Of Signet Ring Background
By definition, signet rings are any type of ring that bears a sign. Signet rings are also known as seal rings, which are used like stamps to indicate the position and title of the sender. When used on a material such as a letter, signet rings are like a signature which authenticates the document being sent out. The term signet ring can also be used to define any device used to make impressions similar to those of signet rings. Signet rings have been a sign of nobility for hundreds of years, especially in Europe. Old signet rings usually had the symbol of a family's coat of arms, which could either be in semiprecious stones or metals. The material used for the engraving of signet rings is usually agate, especially sardonyx or carnelian, which makes the banding stand out from the base.
Metal signet rings are usually cast, and turn out to be less expensive, but are also usually a weaker product. Signet rings are part of the regalia of some monarchies. This means that it becomes part of the regal dresses, and that the jewelry items are only possessed by the royal family. Signet rings are typically worn on the pinky finger, either on the left or the right hand. This depends on the nobility's country of origin. There are some countries, however, that place their signet rings on the ring finger, specifically on the right hand, such as the Swiss nobles. Others, like the German and French nobles, used to place their signet rings on the ring finger of their left hand. For the United Kingdom nobles, signet rings are worn on the left hand and are usually cast in gold. There are some cultures that wear signet rings differently to indicate their marital status, with the seal facing inwards towards their palms, indicating that they are married, while those who wear the ring facing up are not. There are many different ways that signet rings are used and defined.
