The Princess Diana Engagement Ring
Everybody is fascinated by the gracious and beautiful Lady Di. All her life held an air of intrigue, from her complicated marriage to Prince Charles to her beautiful fashions and jewels. The princess owned fabulous pieces of jewelry, and her jewelry collection was estimated to be worth more than $30 million. From all of her jewels, the famous Princess Diana ring and the pearl choker she wore on her wedding day drew more attention than anything else. Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana in February of 1981, and they were married several months later. After she accepted, she was presented with a selection of engagement rings for her consideration by Garrard Jewellers. Diana chose an oval blue sapphire ring that weighed in at 18 carats.
It was unlike other celebrity engagement rings, which the public still hypothesizes about in regards to price. The public knew the cost of the Princess Diana ring instantly. It was, in fact, a piece in the regular Garrard catalog, and could therefore be purchased by anyone, for the price of 28,000 British pounds, or the equivalent of $65,000 at 1981 exchange rates. The Princess Diana ring from Prince Charles was a large oval sapphire surrounded by 14 brilliant-cut diamonds. At first, the Princess Diana ring caused a bit of a stir both among the royal family and the general public when it was discovered that it had not been especially designed for Diana. As with any bride, though, Diana's preference overruled those concerns. So, the rich blue sapphire became an elegant symbol of the couple's commitment. In the early 1980s, no single piece of jewelry represented a fairy tale romance more than the Princess Diana ring. The Princess of Wales had captured the public's heart, and her exquisite taste in jewels became an icon for the royal feeling that every bride wants on her wedding day.
