The significance of signet rings

The significance of signet rings

It used to be that signet rings were only worn by noblemen, and they traditionally bare a sign or seal. Signet rings have traditionally been use for family crests by nobility in ancient Europe, and other countries throughout the world. They are one of the oldest and most symbolic types of jewelry rings throughout history. Signet rings aren't just for the upper crust any more, though. There are signet rings that can be found from a rings manufacturer online, or through commercial retailers. The signet ring has historically displayed a coat of arms, which is meant to distinguish one's family of origin. Solid gold rings have often been used for this purpose, but many different precious metals are available today.

The coat of arms is traditionally engraved with a technique that leaves a raised design on the spot where it is stamped. Signet rings are usually cast, which is actually a less expensive technique than many other types of solid gold ring techniques. Signet rings have been known as a part of the regalia of some monarchies as a sign of rank and authority. This means that thee solid gold rings became part of the regal dress that only the royal families possessed. In some museums, the signet rings are displayed along with the crown, scepter and other royal paraphernalia of a monarch.

The Pope also wears signet rings. After each Pope dies, the signet rings are destroyed, symbolizing his passing away and paving the way for the selection of a new pope. Signet rings are worn on the small finger or fifth finger of noble people, either on the left or right hand. Depending on the nobility's country of origin, they may typically set the solid gold ring on the finger of the hand that their customs have prescribed over time. Some countries, however, place their signet rings on the ring finger, specifically on the right hand.

This is a tradition of Swiss nobles. Nobles in other countries such as Germany and France place their signet rings on the ring finger of their left hand. Nobles in the United Kingdom, wear their signet rings on the left hand. Theirs are always solid gold rings, while some others may use other materials. Some cultures wear their signet rings differently to indicate their marital status. So nobles who wear the jewelry rings with the seal facing inwards towards their palms are married, while those who wear the ring facing up are not. Signet rings are now available from a rings manufacturer online, or from commercial retailers. They are no longer limited to nobles, although most of the aspects of signet rings are attributed to them. Modern signet rings can be a sign of membership, a souvenir to a particular group or a class ring. Many people also purchase signet rings displaying their family crest as a sign of pride.
