The Tahitian Pearl Is The Queen Of Pearls
Pearls are made with the help of nacre, which is a substance used by an oyster to form a pearl. This is what was called the "mother of pearls" in 19th century London. The mother of pearls was used for different jewelry crafting, buttons, inlays and even some carved gaming chips used by the aristocracy mainly in England but also throughout Europe. Pearls are a rarity because only one of 15 or 20 oysters opened is found to have a natural pearl. The most famous pearl of them all is the Tahitian pearl, also known as the black pearl. Tahitian pearl was also called "Azurai" in old Russia, and it represented the centerpiece of a necklace that was part of the Russian crown jewels.
Because of the high demand for Tahitian pearl, all the accessible black-lipped oyster population was almost depleted depleted. In order to find the famous Tahitian pearl, divers had to dive deeper and deeper, leaving so few oysters that the trade could not be sustained any longer. But now, thanks to the careful work of Polynesian growers, there are black pearls on the market that can be sustained. Tahitian pearl has gained more popularity over the last couple of years. It has a black-green appearance, and it often has a cast of a particular color. Tahitian black pearl comes from black-lipped oysters, which are of the mollusk species, and have a dark shell. Although they are known and described as black pearl, the Tahitian pearl comes in a variety of colors, from black to silver and even dark gold. These black-lipped oysters can be found in the lagoons of French Polynesia, Fiji, Samoa and in the atolls of the Cook Islands.
