Understanding white pearl jewelry

The Unique Tahitian Pearl

Tahitian pearl is one of the more striking materials used in modern jewelry designs, and they are not as easy to classify as people might think. Many people think that Tahitian pearl is always black, or that it is always cultivated in Tahiti. While both of these traits are sometimes true in Tahitian pearl jewelry, they are not always necessarily true. Tahitian pearl is used for pearl earrings and rings, though buying an entire strand necklace can get pricey. While Tahitian pearl is usually darker in color, it is not always black as some people believe. Tahitian pearl might also be gray, blue, green or brown.

While Tahitian pearl is sometimes grown in Tahiti, they are also grown in all parts of French Polynesia. It just happens that Tahiti is the commercial center for the trade of this pearl jewelry, but they are cultivated in lagoons of all the islands. It takes about two years for Tahitian pearl to be cultivated, which takes place in large mollusks that are only found in French Polynesia. The dark color of the inner mollusk is what makes for the unique shades of Tahitian pearl rings and earrings. The most popular cultivated Tahitian pearl right now is the dark greenish gray or bluish gray variety with rosy purple overtones.

The color of pearl jewelry is determined by variations in the oyster, color variances in the implanted mussel tissue and the quantity and thickness of the nacre. The temperature and quality of the water will also produce different colors of pearl earrings and rings. The most common colors of Tahitian pearl may be gray, black, green and blue, but there are also other colors that can possibly be produced. Tahitian pearl has an average size of eight to 14 mm, and the perfectly round varieties are hard to find.

Up to 40 percent of implanted black-lipped oysters produce a gem-quality cultured Tahitian pearl, but only about five percent of the pearls they are round. This is why a Tahitian pearl strand necklace is so expensive, as the perfectly round and large gems are extremely rare. For those who want to wear Tahitian pearl, buying pearl earrings or pearl rings with a single gem is the best way to do it. Baroque pearl jewelry is an option for those who still desire a necklace, which is where the gems are not symmetrical. These Tahitian pearl necklace designs are every bit as exotic and a lot more affordable than a perfectly matched strand. Even a single Tahitian pearl makes for a beautiful and unique piece of jewelry that will stand the test of time.
