Princess cut ring diamonds are the second most popular shape, and they accentuate the gem's fire rather than its luster. The top of the diamond is cut into a square shape, and the overall shape of the gem ends of looking similar to a pyramid. Rose cut ring diamonds are a popular variation, which was originally developed in the 16th century by combing two different cuts. The basic rose cut has a flat base and a crown made of triangle-shaped facets in a symmetrical arrangement that end in a point.
