The black pearl is produced by a black-lipped oyster found throughout Micronesia. The Tahitian pearl is cultured by inserting mantle tissue from a sister oyster plus a bead-nucleus, made entirely of processed Mississippi River system clamshell, into the oyster. Most black pearl farms in Tahiti stick to a one-pearl-per oyster policy. As a result, not too many cultured black pearl are available. There are several grades of quality of Black pearl that can be used in pearl jewelry. The best grades of black pearl have a gun metal black color and the lower grades of pearl have a eggplant green over tones. Among the most coveted black pearl colors are high-luster peacock greens and some gun-metal grays. The best quality black pearl also have a high-polish surface. Most of them are round in shape although there are some that are semi round or pear shaped.
